I was recently asked by the folks for Type In to design the poster for their December event. This was one of those fun projects where the only request I received was that a vintage typewriter appear in the final art and that the final be in black an white. Noir it is!
Above is the approved sketch with "place holder" type added in (so I could be sure the hand lettering I was doing would fit where it needed to go).
I did the art in a few pieces, first there was the line work for the illustration, then the lettered bits. I did these all on Canson Pro marker layout paper with sumi ink, brush and a ruling pen.
The final illustration incorporated 3 or four ink wash and paper textures and a little digital painting on layer masks.
And finally, here it is with all the type laid in. I added a wash texture to the title to give it a little added interest...
